Family Promise, formerly the Interfaith Hospitality Network founded in 1986, is a nationwide program uniting religious organizations to help homeless families in their communities. Volunteers turn their churches, synagogues and mosques into temporary homes for up to 14 guests for one week at a time, on a rotation schedule. Each church supplies a place to sleep, dinners, and companionship. St. Stephen's pairs with the Reno North Stake of the Church of Latter-Day Saints, who provide home-cooked dinners and food for lunches and breakfasts as well as evening companionship.
Each year, an increasing number of parishioners at St Stephen's participate in the five yearly hostings for Family Promise in a variety of duties, from setting up the bedrooms, cleaning after the guests depart, overnight stays and evening coordination.
Family Promise offers many rewarding opportunities for St. Stephen's volunteers. Not only do we benefit from working in a worthwhile national program, we also have the chance to interact with other St Stephen's volunteers as well as those from North Stake LDS church.
