Who Are We?

St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, located in the northwest quadrant of Reno, has been an active and thriving church for approximately 75 years. It began as a chapel assigned to minister to students attending the University of Nevada at Reno and then, in 1957, moved to its current site. It has always had a strong tradition of active lay involvement and leadership, both at home and in the diocese.

In 1990, St. Stephen's elected to take a path toward "Total Ministry," following the leadership of Wesley Frensdorff, first Bishop of the Diocese of Nevada. "Total Ministry" is a way to call ministers from within a parish to allow lay leadership in a way that fully values and incorporates the gifts and ministries of the baptized. For the past 18 years, St. Stephen's has successfully identified and called members of our congregation to study for ordination oth to the priesthood and to the deaconate and have supported their ministry as priests and deacons among us. We have used the calling process to identify the gifts of other community members, who have volunteered their time and tallents to provide much of the day-to-day administration of the church, and we have had very active leadership from the vestry and other ministry groups.
